Mother’s Day Shopping In America – 2021
With Mother’s Day fast approaching on May 9th, many Americans have already begun looking for that perfect gift or two for the mothers in their lives. National Retail Federation is projecting Mother’s Day spending to eclipse $28 billion in 2021.
To better understand how American consumers are approaching this year’s Mother’s Day shopping, we compiled search data from Google and surveyed 1050 US consumers to find out what they are buying, where they are buying it and how much they are spending.

STATE BY STATE
This map reflects the most googled mother’s day gifts in each state according to user search data we compiled from Google. Flowers & Chocolates remain the most popular Mother’s Day gift in many states while Outings & Experiences (Restaurants, Spa Treatments, etc.), Gift Cards and Jewelry also remain popular in other states.
Online vs. In-store Shopping
64.8% of Americans plan to do their Mother’s Day shopping online.
30.5% of Americans plan to do their Mother’s Day shopping in-store.
Top Online Destinations
Amazon is the most popular online shopping destination with 73.3% of Americans indicating that they will do their Mother’s Day shopping there. Walmart, Target and ProFlowers were also cited as popular options at 21.9%, 21% and 8.6% respectively.
Top In-store Destinations
Target (41.9%) and Walmart (40.6%) are the two top in-store retailers where American consumers plan to do their Mother’s Day shopping. Local flower shops and Kroger were also popular options at 20.1% and 11.4% respectively.
Projected Average Spend ($)
On average, Americans are planning to spend $212 on Mother’s Day in 2021. There is no significant change from 2020’s Mother’s Day as the average spent was $214.
Impact Of COVID-19 On Amount Spent
Overwhelming majority (59%) of American consumers indicated that COVID-19 will have no impact on the amount they plan to spend on Mother’s Day in 2021.
SURVEY METHODOLOGY & DEMOGRAPHICS
For the purpose of this study, we surveyed 1050 US consumers to find out how they are planning to do Mother’s Day shopping in 2021. The survey was conducted through SurveyMonkey services. For state by state breakdown, we compiled search data from Google Trends and ranked search terms with the highest volume that relate to Mother’s Day gifts.
